LOST SHOES, NO CLUBS, DOZY PLAYERS AND MATCH PLAY MAGIC – WE’VE HAD IT ALL THIS WEEK

So, after three days of dramatic action on course at the 47th Volvo World Match Play Championship, it’s finals day at Finca Cortesín. Home favourite Rafael Cabrera-Bello, major winners Graeme McDowell and Paul Lawrie, and the big-hitting Nicolas Colsaerts, all deserve their place in the semi-finals. They’ve battled, sweated, and played some wonderful golf this week.
As well as the on course action, there have also been some interesting happenings off course. Brandt Snedeker certainly had an eventful week in Spain. The American star didn’t have his clubs, or his golf shoes for his opening game against Thomas Björn. After appearing on the range in some trendy green trainers, the US Tour player casually hit away, while his caddie chatted to his peers about the situation. Defending champion Ian Poulter couldn’t resist the chance to make fun of the flaxen-haired 31-year-old, while Matteo Manassero also found the situation amusing. Maybe Manassero was getting revenge, after Snedeker had referred to the Italian maestro as ‘my little am’ – while playing with the first reserve in Wednesday’s Pro-Am.
Many of the players love the Finca Cortesín Resort - the rooms are luxurious, and it appears the beds do the job too, if Justin Roses’ twitter post about getting 11 hours sleep is anything to go by. Whether he would’ve got any sleep on his Easyjet flight back to England with Ian Poulter is another matter.
Another man who clearly enjoys a good sleep is Belgian Nicolas Colsaerts. If Colsaerts triumphs later today, he’ll have his caddie Brian Nilsson to thank. With the 2011 Volvo China Open champion expecting to be eliminated at the group stages, he took a nap. But other results went his way, and he had a sudden death play-off match with Charl Schwartzel to contest. However Colsaerts was asleep – cue panic, before Nilsson finally located his man, who duly birdied the first play-off hole. The fact that Colsaerts thought he was going home, and now finds himself on the brink of reaching the final, is what makes this format so enthralling. It’s been a week of true Match Play magic.
